This medication is an experimental injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Within minutes of joining one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The vendor sent an guidebook and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to recent cost increases for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using online platforms. But fake injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially significant health risks”.
